STT SnGs

Posted on March 1st, 2010 — in Fun Stuff, Gambling World, Gaming World

A basic online poker strategy for just about all tournament play is to play online poker tight early and open up later when the blinds are higher. This has never been truer for single table sit-n-go games. Here’s the logic. You’re going to get a lot of poker online limpers early on, that limp with garbage since the blinds aren’t so valuable. Well, if they’re not valuable, why limp? Why not wait and catch a premium hand and raise. The next tip you’ll get is that you’re going to want to limp your pocket pairs lower than TT, especially if you’re in position. You do this for set value. Since when you hit your set 1.) it’s a disguised hand and 2.) it’s bound to pay off about 70% of the time unless your facing set over set or set vs. straight or flush. Both of which are highly unlikely on the flop. Finally, you get to the late game. SnGs are easy at the late game, your decisions, they become so simple. If you’re high stacked, you bully. If you’re low stacked, you have only two moves, push fold. If you’re calling 200 with a stack of 1000, then you’re just wasting your time. It’s push/fold all the way. Again, because all-in scares people, and two, you can’t be bluffed off an all-in. Use these simple sit-n-go strategies and you’ll start to see your winnings jump exponentially.

Hand Analysis: Queen-King

Posted on February 19th, 2010 — in Fun Stuff, Gambling World, Gaming World

King queen has a rich history of nickname association, as it is in effect the marriage of the two biggest face cards in the dark, the queen and the king together. It is the largest non-ace connector poker hand, and can be put to use in a wide range of spots. Because when you pair either of the cards you also have a strong kicker to go with it, there is a lot more utility to this hand than the hands close it like K J and K 10, etc. But it is still vulnerable to the very commonly played A Q and A K, as well as very dominated by KK and AA. Because of its wide playability and mix of the two face cards, there are a lot of nicknames for the poker online hand. Mixed marriage (if unsuited) and Marriage (suited) is a weird duality in relation to the suits. Lucky and Ricky, Ferdinand and Isabella, and pretty much any weird celebrity couple might get pulled into the mix. When the hand does not win, it gets called the Divorce hand. Even though these casino pairs and kickers are higher when they get hit, you should still be on the lookout for those dominating hands, but in general betting out and getting called down will result in a win, especially against looser players.

Rookie Recklessness

Posted on January 20th, 2010 — in Fun Stuff, Gambling World, Gaming World

I used to think that new poker players were easy money, but now I know that new poker online players can be a risky proposition. Since they may not know how to play, there’s no telling what they may be doing. They might be betting into a hand with the nuts or nothing more than a high card, mostly because they don’t know any better. You could go all in with pocket Kings, only to be called with a 7-2 that draws into a full boat. Treat a rookie like a reckless player. Since you don’t know how he’s going to be playing (neither does he, by the way), it’s best to treat him like the wild card that he is. Observe him for a while, and see if you can find a pattern of cards that he likes to play. If you find that he likes to play strong online poker hands, play defensively against him-only enter the hand with a strong hand. If he’s willing to play weak hands, consider playing hands that aren’t the strongest-medium pairs may be enough to beat your opponent. At first, caution is your best bet when playing against a rookie, but it shouldn’t take long to figure him out. Once you find a tendency, exploit it until he’s out.

Spread Limit

Spread limit action differs from regular limit or no limit action poker in that, though the amount you can bet on each street is capped, you still have a range of amounts to choose from.

A game, then, where the spread is “one to five limit,” on each street each player can then bet anywhere between one and five dollars. As with other variants of poker online, the spread range often increases on later streets to continue the heightening of action. The title of games where this happens might be “one to five, ten on the end,” which would indicate that in the early rounds a player could bet $1 to $5, while later on the spread increases to $1 to $10.

In these types of games, because of the limiting, it can often be easy to tell the nature of a player’s hand, especially a newcomer, as the patterns of what they do depending on their hand might be more predictable than in a no limit or limit situation.

Another variant, California spread, often includes a very wide range of bets, such as from $1 to $1,000, which essentially then acts as a no limit game, while still avoiding the breaking of the California anti-no limit laws. Remember this when you play poker online.

A Casino near You

Playing online poker Texas Hold ‘Em is one thing. But playing the birck and mortars are totally different animals. Weaker animals. If Online poker is full of tigers, then B&M casinos are full of tree sloths, or maybe platypus. In any event, the point I’m getting across, or at least trying to is that the B&Ms are so soft compared to online games. And here’s why: First off, you have a lot of tourists. I mean a lot of tourists that come with money they’ve budgeted just to play on until they lose it all. This is good for you and your bank roll. Second, you have a load of rich businessmen who just happen to be passing through, and they’re sure enough just as much a fish as the rest of the tourist crowd. Finally, you have your regulars. These guys are solid playersoffline. But the game’s changing. I mean just look at Tom “Durrr” Dwan. One of the best online players using his online gained skills and owning the pros. If you can put 2+2 together, you can see where I’m going with this. Not to mention that you have several people getting comped drinks, and getting drunk, and everything else under the sun that is inhibiting their play. Now, of course you don’t have to take my word for it. I actually prefer the challenge of online poker over B&M play because of the speed. But if you have the patience and time to devote to it, you’ll notice that you have such a huge edge over the non-online players. And this means $$$ in your pocket as easy as cake and as simple as pie.

WSOP Bans Swearing

Posted on March 31st, 2009 — in Fun Stuff, Gambling World, Gaming World

Some interesting new news regarding the upcoming World Series of Poker tournament in Las Vegas: all swearing will be banned. That’s right, no curse words allowed at the WSOP this year, or that poker player will face an as-of-yet unnamed penalty. The new ruling states the following, “Harrah’s prohibits the use of obscene or foul language in any public area of the online casino at any time. Any player who uses such language or makes a foul, profane, obscene or vulgar statement, or speaks abusively or in an intimidating manner to another player, a dealer or a Tournament staff member, will be penalized.”Now, we all know sometime tempers flare up during a heated game of Texas Hold em’, a bad beat gets the best of you and you curse or yell at an opponent. However, one advantage of online poker is that even if you are in a bloody rage no one has to know. You can scream at the computer for several minutes after a bad beat, storm up and down your house or apartment, and then calmly sit down and type “nice hand” or nothing at all. And no one has to be the wiser. And please don’t be that person who types curses and insults at another player in an online poker room. Let’s keep the world a civil place.

Poker Game of Choice

Posted on February 25th, 2009 — in Fun Stuff, Gambling World, Gaming World

Poker offers a broad selection of games. The term poker is a generic name for a variety of formats, which can be played with different numbers cards and outcomes. Some games designate low hands as winners; some allow players to discard and draw new cards, and some even allow wild cards. There are a few games typically found in casinos and at online gaming sites. Texas Hold ‘Em, Omaha (in several variations), seven-card stud and five-card are the most commonly played forms of poker. Which is your best game to play? That all depends on your experience and innate talent for one over the other.

Some theorists believe it’s best to specialize in just one game, like Hold ‘Em or Stud. By focusing on all the elements and nuances of one format, you can gain an edge from continual practice and concentration on your best game.

There are advantages to knowing how to play several games too. It allows you to be more selective about choosing a table. This can be critical in live casinos and poker rooms, where table selection might be limited. If you see that the only table featuring your favorite game is full of aggressive players, then it’s nice to have an option to choose a more relaxed game in a different format.

By varying your game, you can also avoid boredom and burnout, which is a natural result from doing the same thing over and over again. Burnout can put you on lasting tilt and lead to losses.

Finding a happy medium is a good choice. Learn how to play a variety of formats, but focus on your best game most of the time.

Acquiring a Poker Stake

Posted on December 17th, 2008 — in Fun Stuff, Gambling World, Gaming World

In the poker economy, staking is a regular practice that many players engage in, both as the recipient and the lender of the stake. There are many broken deals, misunderstandings and hard feeling surrounding stakes, but by being a person of your word, and associating with people who follow similar codes of ethics, you will both protect your own interests as well as those who put their faith and money in your play.

Before taking a stake from anyone, make sure you have terms that you agree on, and ideally have a contract documenting the deal. If you cannot come to terms you both agree on, amicably walk away from the situation. If you are playing with someone else’s money, you do not want any possible confrontation effecting your decision making at the table. This is one of the first arguments against staking, that the receiver of the stake may play more tentatively so is not to lose the stake and have to explain himself to his backer. If you are in a stake, make sure that you and your backer understand the risk involved, and that although he may end up disappointed, it is the price he pays for having an opportunity to reap profits from your play.

Those who receive stakes are ideally strong poker players, but another quality you must possess is salesmanship. Players who play on stakes need strong negotiation skills as well as other interpersonal skills that allow them to broker a deal that is good for them and for their backer. The best way to self-promote is usually through tournament success, as it is a more tangible means of evaluating one’s success, although it may not translate well to cash game play.

If you are considering staking another player, look at his track record. Is he prone to tilt, or does he have a relatively even-keeled demeanor at the tables? What situation does he have that warrants him needing a stake rather than playing on his own bankroll? There are a plethora of reasons a good poker player may need a stake, and if you can find one that is a good deal for both you and the player you are backing, then the deal is ideal and profitable. However, be careful with getting in too deep on a stake, especially if it negatively affects your bankroll to the point that you cannot afford to play in the games you want to. Also, enabling a losing player or staking a cheat is a disastrous proposition. Be absolutely certain of the character of the person you stake, as it is paramount to you getting your money back, and potentially turning a profit.

Staking is a very delicate and nuanced endeavor, and it is important to be careful and be a smart investor. Protect yourself first and foremost, and you will find that your forays into gambling investments to be more often than not successful.
