Backcountry Safety - An Essential 10-Point Checklist

Posted on April 30th, 2008 — in World Of Leisure

The call of the wild can be seductive. The exquisite beauty of the
wilderness, the incomparable solitude, the simplicity of life on the trail,
and the rush of living a bit on the edge attract thousands of eager
backcountry enthusiasts. Sometimes enthusiasm gets in the way of
wisdom and adequate preparation. Hikers, campers and other nature
lovers can find themselves lost, unprepared or badly hurt. Colorado’s
Mountain Rescue Association reports its teams respond to more than
1,000 search and rescues per year. Victims often suffer from frostbite,
dehydration, shock or severe trauma. Not all emergencies can be
prevented, but many can. Poor preparation, poor judgment and hubris
can be a dangerous combination that can lead to pure misery, injury or
even death. Be wise and commit to the safety rules established by the
experts. The following 10 rules are promoted by the officials of The
Appalachian Club (www.outdoors.org) and the Colorado Mountain Club
(www.cmc.org) :

#1 Alert Others to Your Plans - Be sure to tell family or close
friends where you are going and when you plan to return. Fill out a hiker
log at the Ranger Station in the wilderness area that you intend to visit.
Know who can initiate a search and rescue in the area you are visiting. It
may be the County Sheriff, but in the National Park system it’s the Park
Ranger.

#2 Educate Yourself - There is an ethic of self-reliance in the
backcountry. You have to rely on your own abilities to stay out of a jam,
or get yourself out of one. You must know your own limitations. If you
are heading into a new area, study the guidebooks. Ask around to get
as much information you can on the terrain, the type of experience, the
topography, and any other features you may need to watch out for. Do
not overlook the option of traveling with an organized group with a
knowledgeable leader to give you at least an introduction.

#3 Expect Weather to Change Quickly - In many locations,
weather can be unpredictable and unforgiving. Seasonal changes can
add to this challenge most anywhere. Be sure to check weather reports
before heading out, and if the forecast is dismal, postpone your trip. The
trail will be there tomorrow.

#4 Dress to Prevent Hypothermia - Heed this advice, even if
you are planning a simple day hike. The chief reason that people die in
the backcountry is hypothermia or ‘exposure’ - a lowering of core body
temperature. Jeans and cotton t-shirts become a real problem when
they become wet and hold moisture next to the skin while drawing heat
away from the body. Polypropylene and silk wick moisture away from
the skin and help retain body heat. Next, consider insulating layers such
as synthetic fleece or wool, and an outer shell that protects from wind or
moisture. A hat will significantly help preserve body heat. Loose-fitting
clothing is better than tight fitting. Feet can become cold if your belt or
boots are too tight and impairing your circulation.

#5 Prioritize When Packing - The average survival experience
lasts three days. To negotiate that, you will need some sort of shelter
that provides a windbreak to keep you warm and dry, as well as water to
maintain hydration, a fire starter, a back-up fire starter, and a mirror for
signaling. Do not over-emphasize the usefulness of flares, strobes and
flashlights. Someone may possibly spot them accidentally at night, but
those intentionally looking for you will be searching in daylight. A fire is
more useful. It is reassuring when you are tired, panicky and cold. It can
warm you up, melt snow to keep you hydrated, or to treat a hypothermic
victim with warm liquid. A fire can be a signaling device during the day.
Remember the power of “3″ - three fires in a triangle, three columns of
smoke, three whistles and three gunshots, are the international signal
for distress.

#6 Know Your Equipment - If you are not quite sure how to use
your compass and topographical map, find the appropriate help or
course at an outfitter or in a book by experts. Maps, compasses, and
GPS devices are useless in your pocket. The time to read the
instructions on your emergency fire starter is not when it is dark, you’re
cold, and your hands are shaking. Using your equipment should be
second nature. Survival will be 10% equipment, 10% knowing how to
use it, and 80% will be your own intelligence and attitude.

#7 Stay Hydrated - Drink a minimum of two quarts of water a
day. Hydration is incredibly important in preventing hypothermia and in
maintaining the ability to think clearly. If you lose two percent of your
body’s fluid content through normal sweat and urination, and don’t
replenish it, you can begin experiencing headaches, nausea,
sleeplessness, increased heart rate and decreased muscle strength.
The body cannot generate heat if it’s dehydrated. If you are planning to
get water from a river or stream, bring a water filter or some method of
disinfecting or treating it. Some people boil it. In a survival situation,
keeping yourself hydrated makes drinking any available water worth the
risk. Although water-borne viruses do exist in rivers and streams, you
will probably be rescued by the time that virus makes you sick. Staying
hydrated is most critical.

#8 Feast on Carbohydrates - Carbohydrates provide quick
and sustainable energy. Complex carbohydrates are best, but a mix of
simple and complex carbohydrates is perfectly suitable. Bring foods
such as fruit and granola bars that provide concentrated energy for the
least amount of weight. Proteins, such as beef jerky, are the worst. Your
body needs time and energy to break down proteins, and they can
require a lot of water.

#9 Remain Calm - Keeping your wits about you in an
emergency situation will prolong your life and greatly increase the odds
of survival. Maintaining a positive mental attitude is the biggest
advantage in a survival situation. This is especially important if you
have an injury, a fatality, or someone who is hypothermic or giving up.
These situations will have a debilitating effect on the group. Rescuers
report that they have had people run away from them because they’re in
a hysterical, threatened mindset. Be cool and calm to help you survive.
(Remember, the average situation lasts three days.)

#10 Stay Put - If you become delayed, don’t take off in a
different direction or try a shortcut. Alpine rescuers say that the biggest
problem they have is that people are not where they are supposed to
be. They are often miles from where they said they were going to be. If
you become badly lost, settle down and stay put.

The Temple of Heaven in Beijing

Posted on April 29th, 2008 — in Lots Of Travel Resources

The Temple of Heaven was initially built in Yongle year 18 of
the Ming Dynasty (in 1420). Situated in the southern part of the
city, it covers the total area of 273 hectares. With the
additions and rebuild during the Ming, Qing and other Dynasties,
this grand set of structures look magnificent and glorious, the
dignified environment appears solemn and respectful, it is the
place for both Ming and Qing Dynasty’s Emperors to worship
Heaven and pray for good harvest. The northern part of the
Temple is circular while the southern part is square, implies
“sky is round and earth is square” to better symbolize heaven
and earth. The whole compound is enclosed by two walls, dividing
the whole Temple into inner and outer areas, with the main
structures enclosed in the inner area. The most important
constructions are the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest, the
Circular Mound Altar, Imperial Heaven, The Imperial Vault of
Heaven, Heaven Kitchen, Long Corridor and so on, as well as the
Echo Wall, the Triple-Sound Stone, the Seven-Star Stone and
others of historic interest and scenic beauty. The Temple of
Heaven is a comprehensive expression of the unique construction
techniques from Ming and Qing Dynasties, it is China’s most
treasured ancient architecture, it is also the world’s largest
architectural complex for worship heaven. In 1998, it was
included in the “list of the world heritages” by the United
Nation’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Do you know? There are four wonderful sounds in the Temple of
Heaven! It’s worth your time to study the four wonderful sounds.

1. The echo from the Echo Wall - There is a circular wall around
The Imperial Vault of Heaven, this is the famous Echo Wall. One
person’s mere whisper at any point close to the wall can be
heard clearly on the other side if you draw your ear close to
the wall, it is so clear that it is like talking on the phone.
Do you want to know why? This is possible because the wall is
round and hermetically constructed with smooth, solid bricks, so
the sound wave can transmit to the other side via the extremely
smooth inner circle.

2. The sound of the Dialogue Stone - If you speak while standing
on the 18th stone in front of The Imperial Vault of Heaven, the
sound can clearly pass to the northeast corner of the north side
hall and the northwest of the west side hall that are both 36
meters away. The sound can be heard just as well on the stone
when speaking from the corners of these two side halls, this is
what we call the “Sound of the Dialogue Stone”.

3. Repeating sounds of the Triple-Sound Stone - In front of the
steps leading away from the hall is the Triple-Sound Stone. If
you stand on the first stone and call out or clap your hands,
the sound will echo once; on the second stone, the sound will be
heard twice; and on the third stone, the sound will repeat three
times. Hence it inherited the name. This is because the
distances that the sound wave reflected from the round wall to
the stone are different, the number of echo is also different.
Take a guess which flagstone is at the center of the Echo
Wall’s? The third one. The echo actually gets repeated more than
3 times, it’s just the sound is too weak to be heard after the
4th echo.

4. The hollow of the Heaven’s Center Stone - There is a stone
plate in the center of the Circular Mound Altar called the
Heaven’s Center Stone. Shouting aloud standing above, you will
hear the reverberation of the echo. This is due to the
refraction of the sound.

Determining Keywords

Posted on April 29th, 2008 — in Promoting Stuff

Determining keywords is a critical step in web design. If your website and meta tags do not contain related keywords, web surfers will be unable to find your website when they conduct searches.

The formula is a little tricky - you will need to locate terms that are popular and relevant to your site. These terms may or may not be terms that *you* feel are relevant terms. The optimal terms in a site should be terms that a potential customer would use when searching for a website with your content. In order to achieve success your website should be optimized with terms and phrases that are descriptive, related to your content, and which receive a significant amount of searches. The caveat, of course, is that you want to find terms and phrases where there is little competition, so you quickly achieve high ranking in the important search engines.

relevant + popular with searchers but not with competitors = success

Markets saturated with other sites competing for search terms make it difficult to find quality keywords. Sometimes it is better to optimize for a less popular term, one that is more targeted at your visitor, as it will likely have a higher conversion rate than a less specific popular term. The first step to determining keywords is brainstorming a list of logical terms and phrases that relate to your product or offerings. This should be done by a number of individuals; sometimes people have very different ideas for search terms and by identifying a variety of people and their search terms you may tap words that hadn’t occurred to you. There are a number of free and low-cost tools available online and for download that will allow you to expand and research terms that have been brainstormed. The results typically vary with the tools but overall the tools will assist you in determining where to focus your keyword efforts. The tools will often assist with pay-per-click engines, creating expanded, related keywords or phrases that can be bid on.

In addition to examining log files to see what terms customers are using to find a website, visit competitors web sites and examine their meta tags for additional terms, use a thesaurus to find related terms, include misspellings of keywords in your meta tag keywords, and optimize for various forms of nouns and verbs, including tenses and plurals.

Keyword Tools -

KeywordTumbler - KeywordTumbler takes existing keyword phrases and generates multiple variations, reordering the words. This allows you to build a large keyword list in seconds.

WordTracker - Wordtracker helps you choose the right internet marketing keywords that will help your search engine placement and ranking. Use Wordtracker for keyword research. Web marketing is all about search engine ranking, and that starts with the proper internet marketing keywords. Get a free keyword report and web site promotion information!

Keyword Suggestion Tools - A handy little tool will show you the results of your query from both Wordtracker and Overture for determining which phrases are searched most often. Enter a search phrase below to see how often it’s searched for, as well as get suggestions for alternate (but similar) keywords.

Keyword Ranking Tool - This utility can be used to check search engines for keyword ranking and track search engine ranking for your various keywords over time, which, as you probably know, is critical when doing search engine optimization.

Overture Keyword Tool - After entering a keyword or phrase, Overture provides a list of related phrases that have been searched on. The tool provides a count that indicates the number of times the phrase has been searched on.

Topword Tool - Topword Tool is a free online tool that analyzes a complete web page and counts keyword occurrences, as well as keyword phrases (number in brackets), equal to or above that set in the Minimum Occurrences setting. It supplies a list of keywords and keyword phrases which are most likely to achieve the highest rankings on a major search engine. The tool will also analyze your meta description/keyword and title tags and then, through color coding, inform you of words/phrases which should be included. The main use for this tool is checking your optimization and tweaking existing web sites to rank well.

Google Suggestion - The Google Suggestion is a new online tool for webmasters. As you type into the search box, Google Suggest guesses what you’re typing and offers suggestions in real time. This is similar to Google’s “Did you mean?” feature that offers alternative spellings for your query after you search, except that it works in real time. For example, if you type “bass”, Google Suggest might offer a list of refinements that include “bass fishing” or “bass guitar”. Similarly, if you type in only part of a word, like “progr,” Google Suggest might offer you refinements like “programming”, “programming languages”, “progesterone”, or “progressive”. You can choose one by scrolling up or down the list with the arrow keys or mouse. The tool provides a number that indicates the number of searches a specific word or phrase has had.

Keyword statistics give webmasters a way to tap into what is on the minds of Internet consumers. When you can match your marketing efforts to the various ways people locate their items of interest on the net, potential customers will be streamed to your site like ants to a picnic.

A Plan Of Action

Posted on April 28th, 2008 — in Hall Of Self Improvement

You have finally made the decision that it is time to make some changes in your life. You know that the only way things are going to get better for you financially, spiritually and physically is if you sit up and take action. You know you have to put forth the effort in order to reap the rewards.

So how exactly are you going to implement these changes? You are going to have a “plan of action”.

A plan of action is crucial to your success. Without a plan it is merely a thought. When you add your thoughts to paper coupled with a desire to see them become realities and proceed to do everything possible to fulfill that desire you have a template for success.

A simple equation to use when creating a plan of action from your template is: Desire + Effort = Results.

Your first step is to write down what exactly it is you desire. Albeit wealth, personal development or whatever you so strongly yearn for that you simply can no longer go without, write it down. Make your desires realistic. For example, if your desire is to lose 20 pounds, it is unrealistic to believe you can lose 20 pounds in 3 days. However, it is possible to lose 20 pounds in 3 months with a proper plan of action. It is important to note that there should be a time frame with regards to your plan. These time frames are the milestones to marking your achievements.

Now that you know what your specific desire is, list the ways in which you plan on achieving optimum results. How do I plan to lose these 20 pounds? What do I have to do each day in order to achieve my goal? What do I personally need to do to see this plan come to fruition?

Set up a schedule outlining each step that needs to be taken daily to achieve weekly goals. Be specific. Create a daily “to do” list. At the end of the week you will be able to see how much you were able to accomplish. Congratulate yourself for each accomplishment.

Make a commitment to yourself to “Work the Plan”. Stay focused on the positive. List all the reasons why you will be able to achieve your objective. Utilize the strengths you possess that will help you to complete your plan.

Know your weaknesses and make a concerted effort to overcome them. Incorporate both your strengths and weakness into your plan of action. Know what you are capable of and know what your shortcomings are.

Have your own personal reward system in place. Know what each reward will be for each accomplishment that you have fulfilled throughout your plan. With every desired result you achieve there should be a reward for having done so. An incentive plan customized to your wants.

Do not let yourself get disheartened. If you have a temporary lapse or deviation from the plan acknowledge it and continue to move forward with your plan. Keep the pedal to the metal or your nose to the grindstone, just keep on taking action. Remember, this is not a race to the finish line. Your plan is your future. Take the time to nurture and understand it.

We’ve all heard the adage “Rome was not built in a day”. Your success regarding your plan of action will not be achieved in one day either. Success is a process and the process is something you have a long-term plan for.

“You and only you can determine if the reward is worth the price you are paying for it in effort”.

Event Logos Still Sub ParJonathan Munk

Posted on April 28th, 2008 — in Marketing

For every seminar, conference, and annual event held across the world, there is usually a wordy, poorly designed logo to accompany it. It seems that no matter how much the design community does to impress upon people the importance of a good logo design, it seems as though event planners must not hear it.

Every day as I browse the logo news I find at least one article about a logo being launched for some type of event. When I see the design, I am almost always disappointed with the lack of creativity and general skill level. I’m sure that a logo is one of the last things on a person’s mind when they are trying to secure a venue, attract attendees, fill speaker openings, and make sure everything goes just right. But at the same time, having a killer logo for any event makes it more attractive to potential attendees. The event will have better attendance, build more trust, and perhaps most importantly, sell more promotional products.

This is especially important for large-scale, repeated events, such as the Olympics. Everyone recognizes the five interlocking ring design. But most host cities design a logo for their city that becomes the main logo used to promote the event.

Today one of three logos being used for the Beijing 2008 Olympicsknown as the “Green Olympics” designwas unveiled, and is a big disappointment as well. I’m sure a lot of time and money were spent to come up with this design, but the logo seems very amateurish and lacks visual balance, in my opinion. I would never buy anything with that design on it. Hopefully the Olympic organizing committee will do a better job with the other two logos, which have yet to be revealedthe “People’s Olympics” and “Hi-tech Olympics,” or they may have a plethora of mugs and hats when the final anthem plays.

For anyone thinking about getting a logo designed for their event, read up on LogoWorks in the Wall Street Journal.

Buying Hoodia Extract

Posted on April 28th, 2008 — in Big Medicine

For the last several years, products containing hoodia extract have been featured in ads all over the internet and similar products are sold at large retailers. Media coverage of hoodia cactus extract and its ability to suppress the appetite has been extensive. Correspondents from CBS and the BBC have traveled to Africa to sample the plant. No one knows exactly how long hoodia gordonii has been used by South African natives. The Bushmen or San people have lived in the areas surrounding the Kalahari Desert for thousands of years. The San live a hunter-gatherer way of life. Meaning that they eat what animals they can hunt and what plants they can gather. The hoodia gordonii plant is not a particularly pleasant tasting plant, it was typically eaten by hunters to suppress appetite and thirst when other food was not available.

Products containing hoodia extract are being sold to help dieters achieve their goals. Sticking to a low-calorie diet is not an easy thing to do for anyone. People with a naturally high metabolism may not understand. People with a naturally low appetite may not understand. Those of us with a weight problem and a sluggish metabolism, but what used to be called a “healthy” appetite understand completely. If, hoodia cactus extract can help us resist those delicious high calorie foods, then we are all for it. The problem is that not all products claiming to contain hoodia extract are equally effective.

Hoodia is a term that can refer to any number of plants, so the first goal for the consumer is to find a product that actually contains hoodia gordonii. This is the only species that has been studied for its ability to suppress the appetite of humans and animals. Phytopharm, a British pharmaceutical company, has studied the effects of their patented version of the hoodia cactus extract on overweight individuals. Results showed that these people were able to reduce their caloric intake by as much as 1000 calories per day without feeling hungry. Any product may have a placebo effect in humans; sometimes if we think it will help, it does. So, animal studies may actually be more reliable. Rats that are fed or injected with hoodia extract stop eating. Rats that will eat just about anything, just about all the time.

In order to find a product that contains hoodia gordonii and not some other type of hoodia, a little detective work is necessary. Products displaying a C.I.T.E.S. certification can be purchased with confidence. A CITES license, issued by the South African government, allows a manufacturer to export rare or endangered species. Wild stands of hoodia gordonii are protected from exportation by the government, but South African farmers have cultivated the species. This is the South African hoodia cactus extract that can be legally exported.

There are several independent websites which rank and compare the various products containing hoodia extract. Criteria for these rankings include price, product guarantee and content. For example, Hoodia XR receives high ratings because it is reasonably priced, has a money back guarantee and contains 1000mg of hoodia gordonii. There are many products that blend hoodia cactus extract with other herbs. There are only a few which contain hoodia gordonii as the sole active ingredient and 1000mg is considered a very high content. A satisfaction guarantee is important because hoodia extract does not work for everyone, but most companies offer the best price and free shipping when several bottles are purchased at once. The ability to return those extra bottles, if the first one does not effectively suppress one’s appetite, is a big plus.

Cheap Credit Cards - What Fees Do I Pay!

Posted on April 27th, 2008 — in Mathematics Hall

It is very apparent that a credit card will charge fees in some way or the other. One has to bear the fees somehow or the other.

The key is to look for the card which charges fewer amounts for the services you use. A credit card is used for many purposes. These purposes include shopping, taking cash advances etc. Bank charges different amount of fees for different services for instance if you use cash advances, the fee may be higher, So you should investigate properly about those fees with credit card companies before you sign up with them.

Upfront fees: Every credit card does not charge upfront fees. So try to find out a card, which doesn’t charge such a fee. There is an annual fee for every credit card and if you can bargain for the right rate of upfront fees. This can save a lot of money for you.

Extra fees: This type if fees can be often avoided. But it would be better if you research properly. Some fee like late payment over the credit limit, credit increase, if bargained properly, can save a lot of money for you. Unless a card is offering exceptional rates, these types of programs should be avoided.

Low fees Equal high Rates: If you pay a small amount of fee, you can reduce a large
Balances or balance transfers. It is true that nobody wants to pay extra fee, but there is nothing wrong about it if you get good rebate on your large balances by doing so, there are incentive programs also that you may find with a monthly fee that will still allow you to come out ahead. People who want to pay their balances every month; they can opt for a low rate of interest credit card.

Research Fees: Under federal law, credit card companies are required to list fees and APRs before you apply. This information is often present in a table form. This table includes annual, minimum finances cash advanced transaction, transfer, late payment and over the credit limits fees. This information helps you to decide which card is best for you.

The key is to find the credit card, which charges a lesser fee and rate of interest from you for the services.

Cheap Cell Phone Deals

Posted on April 26th, 2008 — in House Of Hardware

Cheap cell phone deals are everywhere, and if you know how to spot the best from the rest, you can score a couple of good deals like a phone with great features, and a mobile plan with the best rates. Here are some tips.

Know what you need. Most of the cellular phone features can be over the top, and if you just need a phone to make calls, you can do away with these features. Do not sign up for wireless Internet, for example, if you don’t need to check your emails. The cellular phone company may charge you a few dollars monthly just for subscribing to special promos even if you don’t use them, so do not sign up for discount long distance rates, if you rarely make them. Sticking to the basics can keep your cell phone deals cheap, so never subscribe to any service unless you absolutely need it.

Get the most out of the cheapest deals. Why settle for an inferior phone if you can get more? Competition is forcing cellular phone companies to offer everything at low rates - even their handhelds. Compare cheap cell phones before you buy any. Look at handy extras like conference call capability, call holding and barring, speakerphone, and a built-in FM radio or digital camera.

The cheapest cell phone deals are still prepaid deals, which are great for students and other people who want to limit their monthly phone bills. Prepaid are much easier to manage - you only use up what you’ve already paid for, so you don’t risk big monthly bills. Prepaid packages also allow you to move from one cellular service provider to another without the hassle of paperwork. If you find one service unsatisfactory, you simply switch until you find the best one for you.
